In the coming decades, a significant demographic shift is anticipated across European regions, with the population aged 75 years and older poised to double by 2050. This demographic trend poses intricate challenges both on a personal and societal level, necessitating comprehensive and adaptable solutions. The ability for individuals to ‘stay healthy through ageing’ is contingent on a myriad of factors, including diverse living environments, social stressors, and the inherent biology of ageing.
In response to the existing gaps in scientific evidence and the numerous ethical, societal, and structural barriers STAGE, a European research initiative focusing on healthy ageing has been launched this month. Spearheaded by the University of Oulu in Finland, this consortium aims to address these challenges by leveraging data spanning the entire life course. The research endeavors to delve into the intricacies of ageing with multi-morbidity, a condition characterized by the presence of two or more long-term health conditions, and aims to explore preventive measures.
The Universitat de Barcelona is playing a crucial role, leading on WP6, which aims to deliver personalised AI-driven predictive modelling of ageing without mulit-morbidity.
The project marks a significant step towards a better understanding of healthy ageing, offering insights that can inform future policies and interventions in the face of a rapidly changing demographic landscape.
