FUTURE-ES

Trustworthy and muti-centre artificial intelligence for future medical imaging in Spain

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely regarded as one of the most promising and disruptive technologies for future healthcare (e.g. image based diagnosis and treatment planning). However, there is a general lack of trust in existing AI solutions, in particular regarding their clinical safety, technical robustness and ethical compliance.

FUTURE-ES is the first Spanish research project for federated, multi-centre and trustworthy AI in medical imaging across multiple regions of Spain. Its principal aim is to develop, implement and evaluate new federated, integrative and adaptive AI methods that will enable the exploitation of large European cancer imaging datasets, while ensuring the generated AI tools are adjusted and optimised to be generalisable, robust and trustworthy across new imaging protocols, population groups and clinical centres from any of the Spanish communities

To validate the proposed trustworthy methods, AI prediction models for neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment of breast cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, will be developed and validated in a federated manner across multiple clinical centres across Spain. The resultant tools and evaluations are expected to improve clinical trustworthiness in imaging AI following the FUTURE-AI guidelines.
